What's CPD ever done for us?
The ADU's experiences over the last 17 years have led to a better understanding
of the range of skills that an archaeological diving contractor would find essential,
as well as those that would be desirable. In the early days when the range of
tasks was limited every member of staff could do most jobs, but now that a wider
range if skills is required there is a much higher degree of specialisation.
A variety of approaches have been tried to provide the necessary increase in
the skill base of the ADU but the effectiveness of different training methods
has varied considerably. Although there have been exceptions, theoretical courses
run by practitioners seem to have been more useful than those taught by professional
trainers. However, by far the most effective method of providing continuing
professional development has proved to be practical and theoretical experience
gained in the field under the tuition of an experienced practitioner.
