Down Farm, Gussage St Michael (SU005154)

The final site surveyed during this programme of work was a possible mortuary enclosure noted on an aerial photograph of April 1955 (CUC P17-12). An area of 100m x 40m was surveyed over this site using magnetometry, but no features were located. This is surprising given the previous success of the technique when used on another site c.150m to the northeast and would either suggest that the ?mortuary enclosure was a surface feature since removed, or the AP was inaccurately plotted and the site lies beyond the survey area.

The site was subsequently re-surveyed by Reading University using both resistivity and magnetometry, also without result (Green pers comm. 1996).
